Amazon Fire TV Stick HD Viewing

Post by norm15 » Sat Aug 04, 2018 8:37 am

Hi,

I have installed the VBox LiveTV App on an Amazon Fire TV Stick. It is essentially working, but when I try to watch HD channels I keep getting blocks on the screen. My suspicion is that the Amazon TV Stick is not powerful enough.

My Windows 10 laptop and Samsung S8 phone can display the HD channels without any issues. The Amazon Stick is on ethernet, both the phone and Windows laptop work on WiFi, so I don't believe it can be a network speed issue.

Can anyone else successfully watch HD TV on an Amazon Fire TV stick (newest one).

Thanks

The VBox keeps the full broadcast quality therefore some devices may not be able to play HD channels
The stick I am afraid doesn’t have the strength to process Full HD stream

OK thank you for confirming this.

Can anyone recommend a device they are using to view HD content?

How about the other Amazon device, the Fire TV with 4K?

Thanks

The most Android TV Boxes should play HD content, also SBC (Raspberry, Odroid C2...) with Kodi.
How about the other Amazon device, the Fire TV with 4K?
The new Fire TV stick or the Fire TV with 4K should play HD content.

I read the same spec on the Fire TV Stick, which is why I bought it. But for me it doesn't work. I guess Amazon measure by HD content on Amazon video, which I guess must be lower quality than HD from UK terrestrial aerial.

hi

I don't have any Fire TV Sticks.
The most Boxes/sticks work with Hardware-Decoding (inefficient CPU), perhaps you must activate Hardware-Decoding.
Which specification UK terrestrial aerial used ? mpeg4 H264 or H265, fps ...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I've absolutely no idea what type of aerial I have! It looks pretty old.

What type of aerial would be most suitable for UK?

I've tried googling aerial h264 and h265, but I don't see many aerials on my results.

Thanks

hi
I believe in UK is dvt-T2 with h264, but that's not the problem.

1. problems with the stick / software
You can try to play hd content from other source e.g. Youtube if possible

or

2. Network issue
I don't believe it can be a network speed issue
Specially Wifi will arise a lot of problems, e.g different big walls.
You can try to look TV with your laptop in you TV room and see what happen

I have used an ethernet cable to directly connect the Fire TV Stick to my router. My laptop and Samsung S8 phone can both play HD via the VBox Apps when on WiFi. Therefore I can't believe it can be a network issue. The hardwired device should have faster access to the VBox Gateway.

If I try to watch some HD content on YouTube it plays fine. I've gone into the settings of YouTube for the video and 1080p is selected.

I have found a Windows App called MediaInfo and I have opened a recording I did on BBC One HD. Here is the output:

I'm not sure whether this helps at all, but my reading of this is that it is 1080i. When I look on the Amazon website for the Fire TV Stick it references it plays 1080p, but doesn't mention 1080i. Do you think this could be the problem? Maybe the Fire TV Stick doesn't support 1080i in hardware, so it is having to decode in CPU?

Thanks

No, i or p means interlaced or progressive Scanning Methods https://www.dummies.com/consumer-electr ... g-methods/
So, if the stick can play 1080p, the stick could play also 1080i definitely.
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
This is the h264 codec and for the stick no problem.

Can you play your recordings without problems ?
Do you have the new version VBox Live TV app, version 1.11 viewtopic.php?f=6&t=458

You can try to use Kodi with IPTV
