Checking for new software

I recently did a factory reset in the hope of improving what had become unreliable performance with my Vbox. However, when I try to do a quick setup, I cannot get past the first step of "checking for new software". The browser looks like it's trying to load a webpage but it never resolves. I have tried it on a few different devices and browsers but the result is the same. So at the moment the box is basically useless to me. Any suggestions as to how to get it working again?
