Future Browser Support

Post by teebar » Fri Feb 16, 2018 9:14 am

As a new user of Vbox I am pleased with how easy it was to set up. I have had problems watching channels on my PCs and laptops however. All the browsers keep telling me to "install VLC media player and make sure the web plugin is checked". It appears that all of the browsers are dropping support for NPAPI which means that the VLC plugin cannot be installed. A work round has been to install a 32bit Extended Support Release of Firefox. Presumable this wont be maintained indefinitely. Do you have plans for enabling playback on modern browsers?

@teebar
Unfortunately modern browsers do not have support for MPEG-TS which is the encoding used by most broadcasters
However on your PC we have a dedicated Windows Live TV app or you can use 3rd party apps such as Kodi or VLC

If you still want to watch directly on your browser and willing to install a server on your network, you can you use Emby - https://emby.media

I hope that it helps

Ah, I see, thanks. Kodi seems to work well enough, I'll use that.

Hi All,
I understand no latest browser would have operational VLC web plugin.
I can get stream on Windows 10 using Media player.
How can I use VLC on Mac directly to receive stream from VBox, please.
Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Rono

Have you tried firefox esr?

Using vlc while you are in lan you can watch it via:
Upnp
Open network url (look into vbox settings stream - iptv - m3u links)

On Windows 10 you can also use the VBox live TV app, or Kodi - both are available from the Windows 10 store

Mac is one of the only web browsers that still supports VLC web plugin - so you should be able to watch live TV on your Safari
  • VLC web plugin on Mac is not part of VLC player.
  • Download Mac VLC web plugin from the below URL - Make sure that you are getting the latest VLC web plugin version - it's should be somewhere in the middle of the page
  • In Safari type the VBox IP address followed by /livetv - to watch and record live TV straight from your Mac

Yes - download the full VLC version
You have a couple of options to connect
1. From VLC UPnP interface - select the VBox - go to live TV folder
2. via the VBox m3u playlist link
