Channel Changes - UK Freeview (BBC4 HD and others)

Hello,

A few weeks ago some of the UK Freeview channels have moved about (not sure what all this means technically behind the scenes). On our 2 TVs in the house a simple rescan has fixed this.

On the Vbox however, we have a problem when there are some TV channels (on the same RF Channel) that are off-air during the day (eg BBC4 HD) and some that are off-air during the evening (eg CBeebies HD). An RF channel scan picks these 2 channels up when they are not broadcasting but it shows in the Manage Channels screen as "No Audio".

This is understandable when the TV channel is not broadcasting but there is no option to change this to get the audio. If I scan just the single RF channel again when the TV channel is broadcasting then the other channel is no longer broadcasting so I get the same problem but on the other channel!

In the case of the 2 channels above, BBC4 HD starts at 1900 and CBeebies ends at 1900 exactly so there is no time window at all when both are broadcasting.

I might have missed something obvious in the setup screens but I can't find a way to sort this out.

Help please.

Thanks.

Hi @tarmacalastair
Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention
We have support for day/night channels, however if it doesn't work well, it could mean that Freeview have made some changes in the way that they have implemented it
To see if there is a change, we need 1 min full TS recording of both day time and night time (catching both channels)
To make a recording please follow these steps
1. Watch the Channel (CBeebies HD during the day and BBC4 HD at night)

-- If you do not know the frequency that the Channel is on ---
2. Go to Streaming - Status - and write down the tuner that is used to stream the channel
3. Go to Tuners - Status - and write down the frequency for the tuner - this will tell you the channel's frequency
4. Stop the channel playback (make sure that no one else is watching TV via the VBox)

---- To record ----
5. Go to web admin - Streaming - Advanced - Transport Stream Recording
6. Select the same Tuner used to stream the channel
7. Make sure that the frequency is the same one as your Channel's
8. Select 60 sec duration and press the Record button
9. Save the recording to your PC

Upload both recordings to an online storage (Google drive, dropbox, etc...) and send us the link

I think these 2 channels were on different frequencies before so the problem didn't exist (for me at least) and now they are on the same frequency. So a scan of this 1 frequency:

In the day shows:

Code: Select all

CBeebies HD: Audio: English
BBC4 HD: Audio: No Audio
A scan at night shows:

Code: Select all

CBeebies HD: Audio: No Audio
BBC4 HD: Audio: English
In both cases, if I try to change the audio from No Audio, there is no other option to choose.

I will try and run your tests today so that you can see the raw streams.

CBeebies HD and BBC4 HD are sharing the same channel and frequency on Freeview for a log time,
We have implemented support for this channel switching, however they may have changed something

I hope that with your recordings we will be able to figure it out

Hi,

Yes, sorry, I have just looked back at my notes from before and these 2 TV channels were both on C32.

I try to keep my channel list as short as possible and only scan the frequencies that I need so when Freeview changed a few days ago I just scanned the frequencies that I had previously used and could not find these 2 channels at all. So I did a full auto tune scan of all frequencies and found that C32 now reports "Not Available" and these 2 TV channels are both now on C56.

I have done the Transport Stream recording for C56 for the daytime and uploaded to Dropbox. I will do the evening one later (it's currently 13h00).

Thanks.

I've just played back the TS file in VLC and it's showing a completely different channel to either of the ones that I'm having trouble with.

Have I made a mistake? The filename includes the frequency and that is correct for C56.

On VLC go to Playback - Program and you will see the list of recorded channels CBeebiesHD is the last one on the list
So the recording is good
Looking forward to receiving the night recording

Thanks, makes sense now.

This might be useful for you:

Extract from above page:
Both channels share Freeview bandwidth on a timeshare basis, with a switchover at 18:57 each day
It suggests changes in UK started in January and for my transmitter (Ridge Hill) the change took place on 1st March

The evening recording is available at the Dropbox link now, taken at 1908, a few minutes after the channels swapped over.

I've had a quick look at the file in VLC and it does now contain a stream for BBC 4 HD, even though I have not rescanned the RF frequency in the Vbox interface. VLC & Kodi are unable to tune into it via the Vbox. It also contains an audio track when playing BBC4 HD, despite the Manage Channels page still saying No Audio.

Hi
I'd like to better understand the issue.
What exactly do you experience
1. You can hear the sound on both day and night channels - however in the Manage channel - it shows no audio
2. You cannot hear the sound of both day or night channels - and also in the Manage channel - it shows no audio
3. If you scan during the day - you can hear the sound of the day channel, but cannot hear the sound of the night channel (when it airs)
4. Something else

At the moment we hear the sound for both day and night channels in our labs - even though it shows no audio in the manage channel page
If you do not hear the sound in one of the above scenarios - please let us know which apps you are using, when did you run the scan and any additional information that may help us

Thanks
